Michael Matthews, AIA received a Design Award from the American Institute of Architects, Los Angeles chapter. The award honored his architecture firm, Michael Matthews Studio. His “Badwood Ranch” project, a design for a single-family home near Joshua Tree, California, won a 2021 Design Award. The project won in the “Next LA” category for unbuilt or in-progress projects.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is a professional organization for architects in the United States. The AIA offers education, government advocacy, community redevelopment, and public outreach programs, and annually recognizes leaders in the field through its prestigious awards program.

In the jury comments, Michael Matthews Studio was recognized for the project’s sustainability efforts and for his ability to “get creative in the purchasing of new and used building materials”. The project is expected to enter construction in late 2024.
