Known for its exploration of design’s connection to the natural world, Michael Matthews Studio has been recognized as a leader in the design field, with multiple awards from the AIA (American Institute of Architects). Based in Los Angeles, California, we have since developed a diverse design portfolio, with project locations spanning from coast to coast.

We see every project as a blank slate, and prioritize a highly custom design process that caters to the needs of every project based on the client, budget, site, and environment. When we begin working with a client on their project, the process is one of listening – about the location, their wishes and hopes, their thoughts and ideas. We always ask ourselves: how can design best provide the solution?

We believe that world class design and sustainability are intrinsically linked. Not only must a project be beautiful, but it should also achieve a level of function that moves beyond aesthetics. We create spaces that are authentic to people and places, and we strive to blur the boundaries between buildings and nature, reminding us of the environment, even when we are inside. As a signee of the AIA 2030 Commitment, an initiative within the design community to bring sustainable elements to every project, we are a part of a better, more sustainable future.
